Working Together to Help Our Community
Recently our team had the pleasure of meeting with the creators of Milk Sister - a dedicated home breastfeeding support service founded by two sisters. Their mission is to empower and help women as they begin their breastfeeding experience especially in the first 6 weeks.
Here are a few words from Leah, one of the founders of Milk Sister about their new initiative.
“With over a decade of experience as a midwife in Melbourne, I've witnessed a gap in breastfeeding support in our maternity services. This became clearer as I helped my family and friends through post-partum and became a mother myself.
I found that common issues (which can prematurely end a breastfeeding journey) can be prevented with personalised and professional support and education in the comfort of the home from day one.
Enter, Milk Sister! A holistic, at-home breastfeeding support service that was birthed (pardon the pun) by two sisters, a midwife and a marketer, to help empower women as they embark on their breastfeeding journey.
Sometimes, all they need is someone in their corner. To support them as their milk comes in, and troubleshoot common issues related to establishing supply, positioning, and latch. A "breast friend" at their fingertips to ask all those burning questions and cheer them on from the sidelines.
It's no secret that our healthcare system is under immense pressure, with mothers often discharged early. Significant issues can arise at home in those first few weeks before engaging with a lactation consultant in their clinic. We want to catch this gap.
There is an overwhelming sea of information out there, and navigating the start of their breastfeeding journey can be incredibly challenging, but they don't have to do it alone.
At Milk Sister, we want to nurture normal, and in the beginning, breastfeeding can feel everything but normal! Whatever the breastfeeding goal or concern may be, our support sessions help prepare the mind and body, so we can create a positive experience and the best start possible for mothers and their new baby”
Please share with new mammas who may benefit from services by Milk Sister!
Magnesium: How It Can Help Managing Bladder and Pelvic Pain
What is Magnesium?
Magnesium is an essential mineral crucial for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, such as energy production, nerve function, and muscle contraction. It enhances muscle and nerve function, reduces inflammation, supports mental health and alleviates constipation.
Magnesium Forms Explained:
Magnesium is made in various formulations, these have different modes of action therefore having a different effect. Here are some common forms that are available:
Magnesium Glycinate: Boosts overall health, enhances sleep, and reduces anxiety.
Magnesium Citrate: Useful for its laxative effects but may irritate sensitive bladders.
Magnesium Oxide: Less absorbable, potentially causing gastrointestinal issues, can help with constipation.
Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom salt): Ideal for soothing baths to relieve muscle aches.
Magnesium Lactate: Aids digestion and eases constipation.
Magnesium L-threonate: Improves brain function and memory.
Magnesium Malate: Increases energy and supports muscle and nerve functions. This is very useful in targeting smooth muscle such as urinary bladder therefore can help with bladder pain and overactive bladder symptoms
The Role of Magnesium in Pelvic Pain:
Magnesium is vital for optimal nerve transmission and muscle coordination, making it crucial for managing pelvic pain and supporting those with pelvic floor dysfunction.
Dietary Sources:
To boost your magnesium intake, incorporate these magnesium-rich foods into your diet: pumpkin and chia seeds, almonds, Brazil nuts, spinach, and avocados. For a sweet treat, don't forget dark chocolate and bananas. Check out our recipe section for a delicious way to enjoy these magnesium-packed ingredients.
Magnesium Supplements:
Supplementing helps bridge the gap if dietary intake is insufficient. However, select your supplements carefully, avoiding additives like citric acid that can irritate the bladder and always consult with your doctor before commencing.
Introducing Fibroplex Magnesium by Metagenics:
We now stock Fibroplex Magnesium in powder and tablet forms at Health Canvas Clinic. Ideal for anyone managing or looking to improve their magnesium intake, Fibroplex provides a high-quality, effective option.
If you're unsure about which form of magnesium is right for you, or how to integrate it into your health routine, reach out to us.
Rita's Secret Recipes
The Best Healthy Banana Bread
When it’s cold and rainy, one of my favourite recipes is this paleo banana bread. Fresh from the oven, this banana bread fills your kitchen with all the delicious smells, making it one of the best things in the world. It's super moist, gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, and paleo-friendly. It’s my husband’s favourite and hopefully it will be yours too.
Ingredients:
2-3 ripe bananas, approximately 1 1/4 cups mashed
1 fresh banana (for topping)
2 cups almond flour
1/2 cup tapioca flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
2 large eggs
1/4 cup butter or coconut oil, melted
1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
Line a medium loaf pan with parchment paper.
Whisk together all dry ingredients (almond flour, tapioca flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt) and set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk together the mashed bananas, eggs, vanilla, and melted butter until well combined.
Slowly stir the dry mixture into the wet mixture just until moistened and no visible flour remains. Do not use an electric mixer to avoid overmixing the batter.
Transfer the batter to the prepared loaf pan.
Top the banana bread with a fresh banana or any other topping you prefer.
Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes until deep golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
Enjoy warm and fresh out of the oven!
Tips:
I like to add some cut-up dates or, if I’m feeling indulgent, dark chocolate slivers to the batter!
The riper the bananas the sweeter your bread will be. The original recipe I found for this added honey, however I really don’t think it’s necessary as its sweet enough.
I once topped the Paleo Banana Bread with sliced pear and cinnamon, and it turned out very moist and beautiful. Get creative with your toppings and share your favourite combinations!
Storage:
Store it loosely covered at room temperature for the first day.
After that, cover it and store it in the refrigerator.
You can also freeze the loaf and defrost it in the refrigerator when ready to eat.
